Heidi’s Room
Dressed in her nightgown, Heidi climbs from the living room up the steep stairs to her bedroom. It is nice and warm because it is situated above the oven. She snuggles into her bed and dreams of playing with her cows, which Alpöhi has carved out of fir branches.
Children’s Games from the Past
„Bingo” or “Telephone” are children’s games from the 19th century that are still popular today. Before industrialisation, during their little free time, children played with what they found at home. For example “Leg Cows” (ankle bones representing cows), cows made of fir branches, stones or pine cones. The imagination for playing was boundless.
Industrialisation changed toys. Mass production, which began in the days of Heidi, enabled not only wealthy parents to offer their children the chance to play with manufactured toys, but also people who could not afford to spend much money. Dolls, which are still a popular toy today, were also manufactured in serial production.
